Barn tour tickets on sale
June 12, 2012
The Douglas County Historical Society is hosting the “Historic Barns of Carson Valley” tour 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 23.
Tickets are $20 for DCHS members and $25 for nonmembers, which include tours of six historic barns. Also included in the price is free admission to the Courthouse Museum Genoa and the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center at any time during that day. New to the tour this year is an ornithologist who will give a short talk about barn owls at one of the sites. Tickets are limited so order early.
Ticketholders will also receive a two for one discount to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. A free ice cream social and timber framing demonstration by William Hurley will be offered at the park at 1p.m. Hurley will also speak about the newly formed California-Nevada Barn Alliance, dedicated to the preservation of historic rural structures.
“The California-Nevada Barn Alliance is dedicated to helping individuals, families, towns, and historical societies develop knowledge and action plans for their preservation efforts,” Hurley said. “By continuing the life of these barns as useful barn structures, or reinventing them with new lives as educational and community resources, the California-Nevada Barn Alliance and our partners are investing in a much richer future.”
These historic old barns provide a look into the history of ranching and agriculture in the Carson Valley and Nevada. Some are still associated with family ranches. They represent a time when ranching and agriculture were more diversified. Many of these barns are so well built that they are still in use today even after more than 100 years.
Tickets are on sale at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville, located at 1477 Highway 395. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Tickets may also be ordered by phone at 782-2555 and can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, or mailed for a $1 charge.
Proceeds from the “Historic Barns of Carson Valley” tour benefit the Douglas County Historical Society, and help with the operation of The Courthouse Museum Genoa and the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center.
