A great place for families
July 5, 2013
I am amazed time and time again about the opportunities our little community has for families with young children. It’s an issue near and dear to my heart as I embrace the challenges of raising two preschoolers. If you didn’t already know, can I recommend some of the fun (and free, or nearly free) things that are available?
■ Try Geocaching to find treasure in our area. There are easily accessible geocaches located right in the middle of town! While you’re at it, you can read many of the historical markers along the way. Even my 3 year old enjoyed learning about history while we found “treasure” near the JT.
■ Go for a stroller-friendly walk on one of our many trails: the Martin Slough/Heritage Park in Gardnerville, Jake’s Wetlands in Minden, the Nature Conservancy near Genoa, or the new Genoa Trail (which you can wrap up with ice cream at the Genoa Town Store).
■ The Farmer’s Market is a favorite for my kids. We stroll the booths, pick up fresh fruit, and have an impromptu picnic in the park.
■ What’s better than swimming and ice cream? My son’s personal favorite is dollar night at the swim center, available every Friday night, topped off by DQ’s hand-dipped ice cream bars. Hours of fun, and under $10 for a family of four.
I’m very lucky to live in a place that offers so many ways to enjoy my children, while also enjoying my community’s historical and natural riches. I hope you take some time this long weekend to enjoy them, too.
