A golden tree for a golden anniversary
May 31, 2013
On Wednesday, I met Chuck and Marlene Kiel at their place in Kings Lane to see their golden chain tree, which had beautiful yellow flowers hanging from it.
The couple first planted the tree after receiving it on their 50th wedding anniversary, 13 years ago. Marlene said the tree didn't do as well at their home near Holbrook, but when they transplanted it to their home in the Valley it perked right up.
For those who aren't doing the math, the Kiels have been married for 63 years.
The couple told me they've never seen another golden chain tree anywhere else.
According to Wikipedia, the tree's formal name is laburnum and is native to the mountains of southern Europe from France to the Balkans.

Pam Brekas showed me some of the art work that she's selling around the country as part of the Art-o-mat program. Thanks to the former cigarette machines that now vend art, she is selling her work in places like the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. or the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
"I could never get a showing in these places," she said.
But thanks to the little packages, she is selling her art all over the country.
The only one of the vending machines in Nevada is located at the Comopolitan in Las Vegas.
The artwork costs $5 in the machine and she gets half of the proceeds. Every month she gets a list of places where her art has sold and how much she made.

On Monday, we say farewell to our warrior queen, Adele Hoppe. Her real title is lead sales representative, but she has always been the backbone of our operation here in Gardnerville.
Adele was a one-woman cyclone for some of the worst of the Great Recession and was very much responsible for bringing in the dollars that kept The RC afloat when the waves were at their highest.
She is moving on to sell advertising for Nevada Magazine, joining another RC alum, former Publisher Janet Geary, who is running the place.
We had our farewell potluck for her on Thursday, because we're going to be working graduation today.
Good luck and Godspeed, Adele.
