Over the past eight months, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the 2013 Leadership Douglas County class, through our local Chamber of Commerce. At each monthly class meeting, we have had some great speakers and discussions on various aspects of leadership from community leadership to facilitation skills, and constructively managing conflict.
We have also gotten to learn so much about our local community that I don¹t think would be possible otherwise. Whether we were new to the area or grew up here, we have learned so much about the organizations and facilities in our County that most of us did not know of before.
Our class has had the opportunity to visit everything from education, healthcare, State and local government, recreation and tourism, public safety, social services to manufacturing facilities and everything in between. We have met the most amazing people who work and volunteer throughout our community. In addition, we have gotten to know each other, and develop relationships that I think will continue well beyond the class. This has been a truly inspiring experience and a way to get to know our wonderful community better.
As a finalé, our class’s group project is the making connections:
Networking for a Better Community event on 3-6 p.m. Sept. 12 from at the CVIC Hall. The event¹s focus is on how to apply the principles of social business marketing to outreach for non-profit organizations, service clubs and local businesses, and features Bret. L. Simmons, Ph.D., associate professor of management at the University of Nevada, Reno, as well as great networking opportunities to exchange information and build relationships for a better community. If you are interested, the cost is $20 per person, or $15 for two or more people from the same organization, and includes light appetizers and a no host bar.
Registration is available in advance on-line through the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce at www.carsonvalleynv.org or at the event.
Hope to see you there.
