Zabelsky forced out

Let’s face facts. Douglas High School Band Director Bill Zabelsky was forced out of his position by the Douglas County School Board and administration. Because of his courage in standing up for his fellow teachers, parents and most importantly his students, he was labeled a troublemaker. As evidence of their contempt for him , look at the outrageous schedule of classes he’s recently had to follow.

As an amateur musician myself, I have felt very fortunate to have Mr. Z as my daughter’s and grandson’s instructor. I was so pleased to read that he was named the top music teacher in Nevada last May — a well-deserved honor indeed. The number of awards his band has claimed would be hard to match by countless schools across the country.

The Douglas County Fighting Tiger Band has earned the distinction of being called “The Pride of Carson Valley.” At the center of that pride is Mr. Z. Through his 28 years of leadership of the band, it has always been his pride in all his students that has made him a great teacher.

It is my hope that the school board and administration will understand that a great teacher is very difficult to replace, and that school board members are not.
