A quick search of my archive reveals more than 100 items either by or debating something written by Dr. Richard Alan Witzig over the past half dozen years. Dick Witzig first visited me when he moved down to Carson Valley from Incline Village. We had a mutual acquaintance in former Nevada Appeal Publisher Jeff Ackerman.
He played basketball through high school and college and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Dick was a regular writer whose last letter appeared Aug. 1, 2012. He came to see me a few months ago to thank me for running his work. I thanked him for allowing me to print it. Dick died April 18 at age 81.
A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. June 1 at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville.

One of the dangers of staying in one place for any length of time is that you have to say a final farewell to people you’ve known and worked with for a long time. Carson Valley Pops founder Danny Yale was one of those people. Danny’s service was set back a day to 2 p.m. May 19 at the Carson Valley Inn, according to his wife, Cecilia.

Today we’re saying goodbye to Nevada Journalist of Merit and R-C staff writer, Scott Neuffer. Scott came to work for the newspaper in August 2007, spending five and a half years covering business and education. This was not his first stint at The Record-Courier.
As a student at Douglas High School he was an intern for Joyce Hollister. He graduated from Douglas in 2000 and went to college in Utah.
Scott has earned some honors for his school coverage, including the Nevada Press Association’s community service award. I know we’ll all miss his sense of humor and some pretty serious discussions about the news of the day, whether it occurs in the Valley or nationally.
Scott will still do some freelance work for us over the coming years, and he lives in Gardnerville, so we’ll stay in touch.
Kurt Hildebrand is editor of The Record-Courier. Reach him at email@example.com or 782-5121, ext. 215.
