Programs for adopting pets

Douglas Animal Welfare Group members support the adoption of dogs and cats at the Douglas County Animal Shelter in Gardnerville. We want the community to know about two special programs we have available to the community.

The first program: All military veterans who want to adopt dogs or cats from our shelter, DAWG will cover the cost of the animal’s spay or neuter. That is the biggest cost when adopting a pet from a shelter. The veteran must pay the $10 adoption fee and maybe a $15 rabies fee for a total of $25. If the veteran is a Douglas County resident wanting a dog, there is also the dog license of $8. That is still only $33 for a loving companion. Please present a VA card to verify former military status when adopting. Call the shelter at 775-782-9061 or visit DAWG’s website www.dawgrescue.com for available animals. It changes all the time. DAWG honors the service of our men and women in the military, now and in the past.

The second program: DAWG has a new Fix-A-Family-PET spay/neuter voucher program for family dogs and cats belonging to qualifying low-income Douglas County residents. Participating local veterinary hospitals will accept these special vouchers. This program grant is limited to the funds available. Its first come, first served. We appreciate that the Douglas County Commissioners gave DAWG this grant to administer. Please call our Fix-A-Family-PET line 775-364-0320 to apply for a voucher.

Thank you for supporting DAWG and the homeless pets waiting for homes at the Douglas County Animal Shelter.
