The former housemate of a Spanish Springs man found dead on Tuesday is in Douglas County custody in connection with the case.
Billey Stanberry, 48, was taken into custody 7 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant issued out of Fallon after a caller there claimed there was a dead man in the back yard of a home on 160 Mia Drive.
Responding Washoe County deputies found Ryan Petty, 47, on Tuesday evening, dead of a gunshot wound.
Detectives pursuing the case interviewed the caller in Fallon, which along with other information led them to Stanberry.
A Fallon judge issued a warrant for Stanberry on charges unrelated to the homicide investigation. After Washoe County detectives interviewed him, he was taken into custody.
Douglas County detectives found a mini-van belonging to the victim abandoned at the Gardnerville Smith’s supermarket. The van, a red Dodge Caravan with California plates, is related to the homicide and was sealed and transported to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for processing.
Detectives believe the van was abandoned 7-11 a.m. Monday, however it could have been missing from the scene since Sunday. The person who abandoned the van may have left the parking lot on a gas-powered scooter. Anyone who saw the van or its occupants, or a man on a scooter around that time, is urged to contact Washoe County Detectives. Detectives are also interested in any suspicious activity that may have occurred at 160 Mia Drive.
