Get to know Brady

This weekend I met Dave Brady, candidate for Douglas County sheriff at a meet and greet. Dave introduced Steve Orr as the man he’d appoint as under sheriff if he wins this election.

Dave’s presentation demonstrated his prowess with budget numbers to find savings and improve service. Dave is a successful financial planner, former Douglas County commissioner and former Douglas County reserve deputy. Steve Orr is the police chief of Lewiston, Idaho and 26 year veteran of Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Steve told us he has kept a home here and always planned to return.

Dave had polite comments for the job our current Sheriff Ron Pierini has done during his 16-year tenure. However, budget data from 1986 to present show the population of Douglas County has nearly doubled from 24,000 to 47,000. During this same period, the Sheriff’s annual budget rose from $3.1 to $15.3 million, yet we still have the same number of patrols on the road per Sheriff Pierini, quoted in the local newspaper.

Dave and Steve seem to have a natural chemistry about how they would address leadership, financial management, training, and operations if elected. Dave said getting more deputies on patrol would enhance the visibility of law enforcement as a deterrent, especially to the youth in our community.

Dave and Steve stated plans to be visible to the community participating in patrols with their troops. As a retired Air Force Master sergeant, I know the best leaders were the ones that visited their troops where they worked. I feel Dave and Steve’s deputies would be well cared for since they’d know first hand the needs of their people. Time spent with your troops increases morale, enabling better performance of the mission; in this case, protecting and serving our community.

I’ve been satisfied with the performance of our Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, but I didn’t know we had several opportunities to improve the service to the taxpayers. I hope you take the time to get to know Dave Brady and Steve Orr as this is the first time in 32 years we’ve had a choice in the election for sheriff in Douglas County. It might be time to take the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to the next level.
