Obituary: Phyllis Swift LeGault

Phyllis Swift LeGault passed onto eternal life on September 1, 2012, surrounded by her children at her daughter’s home in Minden, Nev.

Born in Vancouver, BC to parents Harold and Olive Swift-Buckle, Phyllis was often referred to by family members as the “energizer bunny” because of her amazing vitality and good health. She attributed her longevity to her love of chocolates and looked forward to birthdays and holidays when she would receive an abundance of her favorite treats. Her gentle, nurturing spirit, easy smile and beautiful blue eyes made all who knew her feel blessed to have known such an amazing woman. She just recently celebrated her milestone 100th birthday that was attended by five generations of family and friends at her daughter’s home in Minden.

Phyllis grew up in Seattle, Washington and married Stewart Marlatt, Sr. in 1931. Their marriage produced two children, Stewart, Jr. and Barbara Jean. After their marriage ended, Phyllis moved to Southern California and began her career working for the Los Angeles County Health Department. There she met and married Donald LeGault, who was also employed by LA County. Phyllis retired after 25 years of dedicated service and moved to the Palm Springs area. She and Don would divide their time between the desert in the winter and Lake Tahoe in the summer. After Don’s passing in 1990, Phyllis moved to Minden with her daughter, Barbara, and son-in-law, Irwin Janssen in 1992.

Phyllis was the great-grandaughter of early pioneer, Shubael T. Swift, who was the 6th and 8th Sheriff of Ormsby County. He served a total of 14 years from 1869-1885. Swift also was the first to capitalize on the curative properties of a local hot springs, Carson Hot Springs, which he purchased in 1880. Then called Swift’s Hot Springs, he went on to build a bath house, club house and hotel. He also formed the S.T. Swift Fire Engine Company No. 3 in 1873.

Preceding Phyllis in passing were her parents, father of her children, Stewart Marlatt, Sr.; her husband, Donald LeGault; and son-in-law Irwin Janssen.
