Chambers Field man found safe in Lee Vining

A man sought by Douglas County authorities since Tuesday night’s fire in Chambers Field was found safe in a Lee Vining motel this afternoon.

Gordon Campbell, 59, and an orange 2005 Hummer he was driving, were last seen at 7 p.m. Tuesday turning toward the home he shares with Mashelle Begovich.

Two hours later when a fire broke out in the home, deputies attempted to find Campbell to determine he wasn’t inside the home.

Investigators determined early this morning that he wasn’t inside the home, but there was no word on where he’d gone.

This afternoon the California Highway Patrol found the Hummer abandoned near north June Lake Loop.

Campbell told officers he’d crashed the Hummer, and went to the motel.

No charges are pending against Campbell.

No one was injured in or fighting the fire which destroyed the home at 1136 Meadowlark Circle.

Firefighters rescued a dog from the burning home, but none of the other animals on the Begovich property were affected by the fire that claimed her home.

With no hydrants in the area, firefighters had to bring water with them to fight the fire, which was reported at 8:45 p.m.

East Fork Deputy Chief Tim Soule said firefighters completed their primary search of the house at 9:10 p.m., and reported the fire knocked down at 9:30 p.m., 45 minutes after the initial call.

“The guys did a great job,” Soule said.

The fire appears to have started on the west side of the house.

Sgt. Pat Brooks said a dozen engines and water tenders responded to the fire in the 2,800-square-foot home. The house is located on a five-acre parcel.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and the cause is still under investigation.

Units from the Gardnerville Ranchos, Gardnerville, Minden, Genoa, Sheridan Acres, Topaz Lake and Johnson Lane responded to the fire.
