District attorney has report on fatal accident involving Minden judge

A Nevada Highway Patrol report on a fatal accident involving Douglas County District Judge Michael Gibbons was forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday.

The Aug. 20 collision resulted in the death of a 61-year-old bicyclist, Gardnerville resident Joseph A. Longo, who succumbed to his injuries eight days later on Aug. 28.

District Attorney Mark Jackson confirmed receiving the report. He said he has scheduled meetings over the next week to gather more information.

“Absent any unexpected or unforeseen events arising from my review of the report and facts and information I will receive from the scheduled meetings, I anticipate a charging decision will be made by the end of this month,” Jackson said in an e-mail to The Record-Courier. Jackson will determine what whether charges will be pursued. The results of the report were not released to The Record-Courier.

The accident occurred 11:05 a.m. at the intersection of East Valley and Pinenut roads, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Gibbons, 57, was westbound on Pinenut when he turned right onto East Valley Road.

Longo was also westbound on Pinenut approaching the same intersection.

The bicycle and the right rear portion of Gibbons’ vehicle made contact.

NHP spokesman Trooper Dave Gibson said Longo, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bicycle and he sustained serious injuries.

The NHP’s Major Accident Investigation Team conducted the accident investigation.
