Man bound over in brandishing, marijuana case

A Gardnerville Ranchos man who allegedly pointed a shotgun at a neighbor who was telling him to slow down through the neighborhood will face felony charges in District Court.

Kevin Duane Garrett, 39, was ordered held to answer on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana for sale after East Fork Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins heard testimony from the victim, another neighbor and two Douglas County peace officers.

The victim testified that he saw Garrett’s work truck speeding down Manhattan Way earlier in the morning on Sept. 2. He said he was familiar with the truck and that it had the sign Garrett Electric on the side.

Later when the victim and his friend were leaving his home, the man said he spotted the truck and backed down Manhattan to talk to him.

The victim and his friend both testified that when he approached Garrett, the man started yelling at him and then brandished a shotgun.

The victim backed away and the two men got back into their truck and drove away around the block while trying to figure out what to do. While driving in the neighborhood, they came across Garrett again. The men testified Garrett walked up to their pickup. That’s when they decided to contact the sheriff’s office about the incident.

After deputies arrived, they located Garrett’s truck at his house and when they tried to talk to him, he locked himself in.

Eventually they entered the home and took Garrett into custody. During a search of the property they found a travel trailer used to grow marijuana.

Sgt. Jim Halsey testified he found 20 mature plants and 23 immature plants inside. He said there was a switch panel used to operate the lights, interior irrigation and an air conditioner.

While the trailer had a hitch, the water was brought in through a PVC pipe into the bottom of the trailer.

Perkins set a Sept. 24 District Court date.
