Emergency response team training this weekend

Douglas County Emergency Management is once again offering Community Emergency Response Team training. The class will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at East Fork Station No. 2, Gardnerville Volunteer Fire Department at 1265 Douglas Ave.

“This training is excellent for personal use to help families prepare for major disasters and once you have taken the class you are eligible to apply to become a volunteer member of the Douglas County team,” officials said.

The program educates people in disaster preparedness for hazards that may affect their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. Members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Volunteers receive additional training throughout the year in disaster psychology, shelter care management, large animal evacuation and emergency operations center support to assist other Douglas County, state and national organizations in the event of a local disaster or large scale emergency.

Anyone interested in developing their own preparedness in the event of an emergency, is interested in being a member of the Douglas County CERT or would like more information, should contact the East Fork Fire and Paramedic Districts Office. Pre-registrater for the class by calling the East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts Office at 782-9040.
