$250,000 bail for shooting suspect

Bail is $250,000 for a 44-year-old Topaz Ranch Estates man charged with attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon in last week’s shooting of an acquaintance who suffered a superficial shoulder wound.

Gary Wesley Wilson appeared Monday in custody for arraignment on the charge which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison upon conviction.

Wilson shook his head as East Fork Judge Tom Perkins read the charge against him.

Wilson is accused of shooting the victim with a .22-caliber rifle loaded with birdshot as the man sat in his vehicle, and attempted to run away.

The shooting took place July 11 shortly before noon at 3701 Highway 208 in Topaz Ranch Estates.

According to reports, Wilson and the victim had both been in a dating relationship with another woman.

A witness told Douglas County sheriff’s investigators that Wilson believed the suspect meant harm to the woman.

The woman told authorities that she and the victim had words, and she called Wilson at work, reportedly telling his boss she had an emergency.

She disputed the victim’s claim that she told Wilson “to get him (the victim).” She said she told the defendant to stop shooting.

She said she saw Wilson allegedly fire twice and heard three more shots.

Reports indicate the suspect broke the windows out of the victim’s vehicle, and fired at him nine times.

The victim had injuries to his left shoulder and the back of his neck.

Authorities recovered the weapon which was a Henry lever-action .22-caliber rifle.

Wilson turned himself in on Friday after a 26-hour search by law enforcement personnel.

Perkins appointed attorney Kris Brown to represent Wilson.

The defendant said he earned $1,800-$2,000 a month as an employee of Topaz Ranch Estates General Improvement District, but he wasn’t sure if he still had his job.

Perkins set another hearing today for Wilson and his lawyer. A preliminary hearing is scheduled July 26.
