Suspect pleads not guilty to child pornography charge

A 28-year-old Gardnerville Ranchos man pleaded not guilty before a federal magistrate in Reno to one count of receipt of child pornography.

Jarrod Allen Pounds is set for a jury trial Aug. 12 in Reno federal court before Judge Miranda M. Du.

Pounds was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 12.

If convicted he faces five to 20 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

Pounds is in custody in Washoe County Jail.

He was arrested on June 6.

According to the criminal complaint, Pounds was a suspect following an undercover operation conducted by a special deputy U.S. marshal assigned to investigate online child sexual exploitation.

Officers executed a federal search warrant for his residence in the 1300 block of Patricia Drive on June 6.

Occupants of the home identified the suspect’s bedroom and laptop computer, where investigators found several external hard drives which contained backup copies of his computer hard drive.

Within the backup copy, the investigator located “what appeared to be thousands of videos and images containing child pornography and child erotica,” according to the complaint.

While the search was being conducted, Pounds was interviewed by a Washoe County Sheriff’s deputy at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

He reportedly admitted using file-sharing software, but denied downloading child pornography.

Pounds was released after the interview and observed driving slowly up to his residence. After seeing investigators were there, Pounds sped away.

He was later taken into custody.

In addition to a mandatory prison sentence if convicted, Pounds must forfeit his computer and miscellaneous hard drives.
