Friends of longtime Carson Valley resident Carmen Altemueller are holding a fundraiser June 15 to assist with expenses associated with the recent diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor.
Altemueller, 53, was vacationing in Costa Rica with her boyfriend when she became ill.
Friend Connie Richardson said she was hospitalized for several days and doctors discovered a bleed in her brain.
She returned to Reno and was admitted to Renown Regional Medical Center.
An aggressive and malignant brain tumor larger than a golf ball was discovered in her brain.
Due to her condition, surgery is not an option. Altemueller is on anti-inflammatory and steroid medication to help slow the tumor’s growth.
Richardson said Altemueller’s father is in his 80s and lives in Canada where he is dealing with his wife’s advanced multiple sclerosis. She also has a brother Klaus in Las Vegas and a sister in Germany.
“Carmen was 7 when she moved here from Kentucky with her parents and brother,” Richardson said.
She is a Douglas High graduate and recently helped plan her 35th class reunion.
Altemueller, well-known for her love of Arabian horses, has many friends in the area, Richardson said.
“Carmen is a loving, kind and caring person who would do anything for anyone at anytime,” she said.
The benefit begins at 2 p.m. with the barbecue at 4 p.m., at BR Ranch, 1668 Pine Nut Road, Gardnerville.
Tickets are $20 and include the barbecue.
They are available at JT Basque Restaurant, Full Circle Compost, Tangles Hair Salon or at the event.
