Sweet Sippin’ Sundays begin May 5

What was conceived by five friends and fellow business owners in Nevada’s oldest town has now become a mainstay Sunday event.

Starting the first Sunday of May and running through October, Genoa’s Sweet Sippin’ Sundays return for a second season.

Event creators Christine Adamson of Genoa Trading Co., Connie Roth of Dancing Deer, Nanette Toland of Sweet Repeats, Suzanne Corban of Genoa Floral Creations, and Terri Billman of Trimmers Outpost, all members of the Greater Genoa Business Association, wanted a way to highlight the town’s business community while giving back to local charities.

“The event exceeded all expectations in its first year,” Toland said in a press release. “It’s pretty cool to chat with people and find out where they are from and what prompted them to come and sip with us. They all appreciate the fact that their money is going to a local charity.”

Last year’s events raised close to $4,000 for local charities such as DAWG, Douglas Co. Seniors, Austin’s House, Douglas Center for Hope and Healing, and the GGBA.

“Last year, the GGBA was able to afford the beautiful Town of Genoa wagon sign that sits at Highway 395 and Genoa Lane,” Toland said. “This year they are hoping to have enough money to put lights on that sign.”

The “3S” committee has selected charities this year “that we feel touch everyone’s lives in one way or another,” including the Suicide Prevention Network, DAWG, and Douglas County elementary schools.

Committee members would like to partner with a local corporation to match their donations.

“It is important for all of us to help support the citizens of our community, and partnering with Sweet Sippin’ Sundays is an easy way for any local business to get their name out there while helping support people right here at home,” Toland said.

Sweet Sippin’ Sundays run 1-4 p.m. the first Sunday of the month. Participants must purchase a passport and a commemorative glass for $12 ($10 for returning glasses).

While strolling the street and listening to live music, sippers get their passports stamped at each participating business. Completed passports will be entered into a drawing for $100 in Genoa bucks.

“We serve a different cocktail and support a different charity each month,” said Toland. “Just as the Cowboy Festival is winding down, Sweet Sippin’ Sunday will commence.”

The May 5 event begins with a Cinco de Mayo brunch at the Genoa Fire Station sponsored by the Minden Rotary. The registration booth will be located in front of the Masonic Lodge.

Proceeds will benefit Jacks Valley and Piñon Hills elementary schools.
