Brother of Olympic skier found dead at Mammoth Lakes

The brother of Olympic alpine ski racer Bode Miller was found dead in a van on Sunday afternoon in the Mammoth Lakes area.

Chelone “Chilly’ Miller, 29, of Easton, N.H., was found unresponsive in his van in the Mammoth Lakes area, according to the Mono County Sheriff’s Office.

Rescuers were dispatched to the scene and determined Miller had died.

The cause of death is currently being investigated by the Mono County Sheriff’s Department pending autopsy results.

The U.S. Snowboarding Association reported Miller died from an apparent seizure, stemming from a 2005 motorcycle accident that placed him in coma for 11 days.

He returned to competitive snowboarding, and in 2010, he had a superpark victory at Mammoth using his signature style, the association release said. In recent years, he had been focusing on snowboardcross in order to qualify for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Just over a month ago, the association said his Olympic dream showed promise as he finished fourth in the 2013 Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix at Canyons, Utah, and on March 12 he won the Rahlves Banzai Tour overall title with a victory in Sugar Bowl, Calif.

“Chelone Miller was an aspiring elite athlete who had made great progress as a snowboardcross rider this past season, said U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Bill Marolt. “We are all deeply saddened at the news of his death and extend our condolences to the entire Miller family.”

His career also included both filming with Warren Miller and other companies. Information on services is pending.
