Cowboy Poetry rounding the barrels

With less than a month before Genoa’s May 3-5 Cowboy Festival, the events’ dashboard indicators are starting to move into the green.

Town Manager Sheryl Gonzales said that as of Tuesday, the town is only $2,000 short of its $25,000 goal for sponsorships. The Heritage Club, which is a major source of revenue for the event, is at $31,500, approaching its goal of $35,000. So far, 750 tickets to the event had been sold, up from 600 this time last year.

She said that in the coming weeks the event’s major marketing campaign will begin with billboards going up around the Valley. Programs for the event are ready for distribution.

Benefactors include the Carson Valley Visitor’s Authority, which paid for $5,000 in tickets, coordinator Dan Aynesworth said.

Begun in 2010 as a second major fundraiser to support Nevada’s oldest town, the festival took poetry out of the name and reduced a day from previous years.

The event’s gross receipts barely covered its costs last year, but townspeople are hopeful that the streamlined event will fulfill its promise.

The town is seeking volunteers to help put on the festival, which features music from headliners such as Riders in the Sky with the Reno Brass Quintet, Hot Club of Cowtown, the Saddle Cats, and True West Magazine’s 2013 Best Solo Musician Mary Kaye and her band. Also on hand will be Nevada cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell and award-winning guitarist and singer Dave Stamey.

Volunteers assist setting up the event, greeting visitors at entertainment venues, and meeting the public at educational workshops such as fiddlin’ and leather carving, and selling western clothing in the mercantile store.

Volunteers who donate four or more hours to the event earn a free day pass.
