Walk, run helps children with autism

Families for Effective Autism Treatment of the Carson Valley is throwing down the gauntlet to raise $20,000 during the annual 5 or 10K walk/run.

The fourth annual fundraiser is April 27 at Heritage Park in Gardnerville. Registration time is 9 a.m. for 10K and 9:30 a.m. for 5K walkers.

“Our endeavor to help children with autism, which now affects 1 in 88 is the driving force to make this our best event yet,” Treasurer Tara Addeo said. “We have so many needs in our community for children with autism, and we don’t have enough funds to help everybody.”

In 2012, FEAT assisted nine children under the age of 17 with various therapies, supplements, and education.

“Because the state stopped funding some years ago and some insurance companies don’t help, it’s critical for organizations like FEAT to get involved and help,” Addeo said, “Because therapies can range upwards from $50,000 to $60,000 a year.”

The cost to walk is $30 per person, which includes a T-shirt, lunch and a raffle ticket.

Addeo encourages teams to sign up and walk together.

“It creates a bond between the people walking together, and it’s fun to do,” Addeo said. “We have many opportunities for the community to assist us in helping children with autism in Northern Nevada. Supporters may register to walk or run on the day of the event, sponsor a participant, purchase a 10x10 vendor space, or be a sponsor for your business or family.”

Along with close to 25 local business vendors at the park, there will be raffle drawings throughout the day with a grand prize of a Reno Aces luxury suite package for 20 people.

“I’m so blessed because all three of my daughters have not had a situation like this,” Addeo said, “but for families who have been affected by this, we all need to support one another. So come and enjoy local food, booths and raffle prizes on April 27 and support children with autism.”
