Obituary: Lawrence E. Phelps

July 20, 1938 - March 9, 2013

On March 9, 2013 our beloved Larry was taken from us at the age of 74 due to a tragic accident. Larry’s life was filled with family who cherished him and friends who deeply appreciated his kindness, consideration and quirky humor.

Larry was born July 20, 1938 in Long Beach, California to Myrtle and Donald Phelps. He was raised in Long Beach, California, graduated University of California at Santa Barbara and became a respected high school educator at Palm Springs High School primarily teaching wood shop classes. He was a favorite teacher and mentor to thousands of youth. He was also a leader in his field nationwide actively participating in VICA, Vocational, Industrial Clubs of America.

On July 5, 1997 Larry married the love of his life, Cindy Whiteley. He enjoyed great happiness with his wife and wonderful ready-made family. Larry rapidly and joyfully found his home filled with three busy females, assorted dogs, cats and horses. He barely minded the lack of access to hot water and bathrooms.

In 2003, Larry and Cindy moved to Minden, Nevada, his previous vacation home. Larry was strong, creative and multitalented as he worked on dozens of projects around his home and property. Cindy often found him difficult to locate as he moved from project to project, puttering and beautifying their surroundings with his amazing workmanship. Larry also loved to read. He completed boxes of books each year. Daughter, Michelle, credited her love of reading to his example.

Upon learning of Larry’s sudden death, friends commented on his willingness to lend a hand to all, his special wit and invaluable service to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. All expressed their privilege to know him and their deep sadness of his loss.

Larry is survived by his wife, Cindy; son, Master Sergeant Christopher Chambers (Annette; grandchildren, Joey and Alyssa); daughters, Denise Warrick (grandchildren, Cody, Corrie) and Michelle Russell (Sheldon and grandchildren, Leah and Jazzlynn), Julie Phelps and brother, Jim Phelps (Jean).

Family, friends and community will miss Larry and never forget him.

In lieu of flowers, donations accepted in Larry’s memory may be made to Scholarship Fund for Industrial Arts Education, to Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, P.O. Box 1894, Minden, Nevada 89423 Attention: Sandy Jonkey

Celebrations of a life well lived will be held at a later date in Minden, NV and Palm Springs, CA.
