Norman A. Vitale, 85 of Minden, NV, formerly of Waterford, CT passed away peacefully at his home on July 30, 2014, with his wife, Mary by his side. He was born in Wellesley, MA on July 27, 1929. He was the son of the late Nicholas and Harriet (Clarke) Vitale. Norman graduated from Wellesley High School in 1948 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving over 21 years. He served on the USS NAUTILUS (SSN571) during its historic submerged cruise to the North Pole in August of 1958. He served on submarines USS TORSK (SSN423), USS REQUIN (SS481), and USS ETHAN ALLEN (SSBN608). He retired as a Chief Warrant officer (CWO-2) in 1969, while he was stationed at the New London Sub Base. After retiring from the Navy, Norm performed Quality Assurance at various Nuclear power plants throughout the country. He attended New Hampshire College for three years where he studied business, and retired from the Nuclear industry in 1991. Norman was married to Mary Yerkes on May 29, 1976. After living in various states, they moved to Minden, NV in 1983. Norm’s love for travel took he and Mary on numerous trips to Australia, Hawaii, Europe, South America, Asia and throughout the U.S. and Canada. In addition to his wife, Mary of 38 years, Norman is survived by eight children from a previous marriage to Anne A. Vitale, five sons, James of New London, CT, Norman of Pawcatuck, CT, Thomas and Marsha of Waterford, CT, Robert and his wife, Michelle of Branford, CT, John and his wife Tammy of Colchester, CT; and three daughters, Carol Garrett with her husband Jeffrey of Vandergrift, PA, Betty Zoubek and her husband Joseph of Waterford, CT, Kathy Barber and her husband, Jeffrey of Waterford, CT; numerous grandchildren, one niece and four nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth M. (Vitale) Lucenta. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Norman will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, date to be determined.
