Jan. 6, 1922 - Mar. 24, 2014
Hedy Amelia Sutherland died March 24,2014 at age 92 at Gardnerville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She passed peacefully in her sleep while recovering from a broken leg she got from a fall March 1 in her apt. at Emeritis Senior Living in Gardnerville. Hedy was born Jan. 6,1922 to Frank and Amy Zagar in Clear Creek, Utah. She was a stewardess for United Air Lines where she met and married United Air Lines pilot G.L. (Bill) Sutherland in the early 1940’s. They lived in the Bay Area but spent every summer and vacation at the house Bill built on Needle Peak Rd. in South Lake Tahoe from 1953-1984 when they moved to a house Bill designed in Tahoe Keys. Hedy thoroughly enjoyed Tahoe’s wonders with her family by hiking and camping in Desolation Wilderness, water and snow skiing and entertaining many guests. Hedy and Bill leased and operated the rope-tow at the top of Ski Run Blvd. for several winters until it closed when Heavenly Valley opened in the early 1950’s. Hedy was preceded in death by her husband Bill and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Joy and Rod Smith, son John, grandchildren Cal, Jake, Jeff, Will and Matt and great grandchildren Anna, Ava, Lily and Griz. Hedy will be remembered for her many attributes, especially her love of family, grace, selflessness, love and respect for nature, adventure, quick sarcastic wit,
forgiveness and generosity. Her wishes were there to be no formal funeral and that she be cremated and her ashes be spread by her family. Friends will be notified when there will be a Celebration of her Life in late June 2014 at her daughter’s house in Gardnerville, Nevada. Hedy’s family deeply appreciates the many cards, calls, thoughts and prayers received after news of her passing.
