March 9, 1919 - February 4, 2014
On February 4, 2014, the halls of heaven were brightened as Mary Kerwin Gunn entered its realms. Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, Mary was born in San Jose, CA on March 9, 1919 to Joseph and Irene Quilty Kerwin. She and her two older brothers, Jack and Charles Kerwin grew up in Oakland, attending Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School and Oakland High School. In 1940 she married Robert Viggo Gunn and made her home in the Bay Area, raising two daughters, Sister Sally Gunn and Sue Ewald. In 1966 Mary and Bob moved to Reno. There she joined the Little Flower Church and not only became a member of the choir, but recruited her grandchildren to help her create a “Casino Night” as an annual fundraiser for the Church. She also joined the Women’ s Boutique at Our Lady of Snows during this time. Later they moved to Sparks where she attended Holy Cross Church and became an active participant in their RCIA program. After Bob’s death, Mary finally realized her dream of travel and adventure and spent the next few years with friends and family, going wherever her spirit moved her - from Branson, Missouri to England and Scotland, with many places in between. Mary moved to Minden Nevada in 2001 to live with her daughter Sue and her son-in-law Hans who have lovingly cared for Mom ever since. While in Minden she became active in St. Gall Catholic Church and the Douglas County Senior Center. Mom’s friendliness and positive spirit touched many lives. She loved gathering with friends and most of all, loved her family. She made frequent trips to the convents where Sally lived and kept up with many of the Sisters of the Holy Names. Her love of music and her beautiful voice, filled our lives with many magical moments. She will live forever in our hearts and mind, and will be greatly missed by her daughters, her grandchildren, George Tolon, Stephanie and Ken Burger, Jenny Holaday, Carmen Ewald and Monique Anderson, and by her great-grandchildren Megan, JP, Jessica, Makenzie, Mary Scout, Jake, Joel, Cody, Tony, Brandon, and Chynna. She is reunited with her husband Bob, her great-grandson Landon, her brother Jack, her brother Chuck and sister-in-law Ruth, her father, and at long last, her Mother, Mimi. She has inspired us all by her unwavering faith and her unconditional love. What a blessing we all have had by her presence in our lives. We will gather to celebrate her extraordinary life on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00am at St. Gall Catholic Church, 1343 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville, NV. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mary’s memory may be made to the St. Gall Memorial Garden or to the Sisters of the Holy Names.
