Zogorski named Citizen of the Year
March 13, 2014
The Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge 2670 recently honored lodge member Tom Zogorski with their esteemed “Citizen of the Year” award. It is rare for a lodge member to receive this honor; during the past 20 years, only five recipients have belonged to the Elks.
Zogorski’s selection was based upon his extensive volunteer service to the community.
Since moving to Gardnerville in 2005, Tom and his wife, Kathryn, have been actively involved in lodge activities. Tom’s organizational capability and tireless efforts have helped the Elks’ annual flea market expand into a major funding event for the lodge. Grants penned by Zogorski have resulted in thousands of dollars benefitting both the lodge and local school children; most recently he’s written grants for bicycle helmets, children’s clothing, and library books for Meneley Elementary School. He arranged for lodge participation in the annual Death Ride set up, which is a vital source of revenue for Alpine County. He has held various officer and chair positions within the lodge and was named Exalted Ruler in 2010-2011. Lodge recognitions have included an “Officer of the Year” award and “Elk of the Year” in 2012-2013.
Zogorski extends himself beyond the local lodge and also volunteers at the Lake Tahoe Lodge. His grant writing efforts there spearheaded the “Live Violence Free” effort for the needy children’s lunch program and he was a driving force in securing and coordinating low-cost food availability in Zephyr Cove through the Northern Nevada Food Bank.
The veteran population is near and dear to Zogorski’s heart. He organizes lodge member visits to the Reno Veterans Hospital and an annual Veterans Day dinner for needy and disabled veterans. During his term as Exalted Ruler in 2010, he arranged a special evening tribute in honor of all Douglas County veterans that included plenty of entertainment and refreshments. Most recently, he assumed directorship of the newly formed Douglas County veterans help group, Welcome All Veterans Everywhere. The group’s mission is to provide veterans and their families a safe, welcoming, nurturing, one-stop location of professional services.
A member of the St. Gall Catholic community, Zogorski works alongside the gardening crew fertilizing lawns and pruning roses on the church grounds. He’s involved in the Memorial Garden committee, which is actively working toward the development and construction of a Columbarium building and garden to be located on St. Gall’s property. Zogorski is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a church service organization.
With that resume, it’s hard to believe Zogorski has any free time. In between his considerable service activities, he loves to snow ski, fish, and golf. He and Kathryn enjoy spending time with their son and grandson in California, and occasionally travel to the eastern United States to visit family.
How fortunate to have such a gifted and giving individual in our midst. Congratulations to Tom Zogorski, Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge 2670 Citizen of the Year.
