Wayward cows cause accidents on 395

Staff Reports

Escaped cattle wreaked havoc on Highway 395 Thursday night, causing at least two accidents, directly and indirectly.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, a red Subaru wagon traveling southbound at approximately 6:40 p.m. struck at least one wayward bovine, possibly two, near the intersection of Airport Road. The car suffered major damage, but the driver only minor cuts and bruises.

According to eye witnesses, the cattle perished and were visible on the roadway. One lane was closed down and traffic diverted as crews cleared the scene.

According to NHP Public Affairs Coordinator Barb Stapleton, a second accident occurred shortly after the first approximately 1,000 yards north. The latter involved two vehicles but no cows.

“It was just a secondary crash due to the one involving the cows,” she said.

Officials are investigating how the creatures ambled onto the roadway from adjacent rangeland.
