Walmart working out site issues of new store
July 29, 2011
Developers of Walmart in south Gardnerville still have some site issues to work out before passersby will see any vertical construction.
According to Douglas County Community Development Director Mimi Moss, the county has not yet issued a site improvement permit for the 152,495-square-foot superstore located behind Les Schwab Tires.
“They’ve resubmitted changes to the drainage report,” she said. “We understand Walmart is working with the Gardnerville Water Co. on improvements necessary to serve the building. Walmart is also preparing a flood insurance study for Grant Drive, the new street. So there are three items we are aware of.”
Moss said Walmart already has submitted an application for a building permit.
“It’s ready to be issued, awaiting completion of the site improvement permit,” she said. “Our hopes are to finalize that within 30 days or less. There is some extensive site work to do, extending utilities underground and other work. I think that will be their focus this construction season.”
In March 2010, Walmart purchased 18 acres of commercial property between Highway 395 and the unfinished portion of Muller Parkway. Initially, the store was scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2012.
