Truckload of bees overturns near Tonopah

A truckload of bees were released when a semi rolled off Highway 6 just east of Tonopah on Monday afternoon.

Truck driver Rudy L. Breneman, 66, of Marion, S.D., told Nevada Highway Patrol troopers he pulled off onto the narrow shoulder to inspect his load before entering Tonopah. The accident occurred three miles east of Tonopah.

The 2002 Peterbilt tractor pulling a flatbed trailer transporting honey bees sank in the soft dirt at about 12:30 p.m. and rolled over onto its side, breaching many of the hives, according to Trooper Chuck Allen of the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Firefighters tried to calm the bees with water while waiting for beekeepers. Several first responders were stung during the incident..

Breneman was not injured in the accident and was not cited for the incident either. His trip had originated in Bruce, S.D., and he was taking the bees to Arvin, Calif.
