Tiger golfers capture tournament win

by Joey Crandall

The Douglas High girls’ golf team closed out the regular season with a big win Monday afternoon, capturing its home tournament by 15 strokes.

“It was a great day,” Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. “It was good to win the last match heading into regionals. We need all the momentum we can get against the High Desert League powerhouses like McQueen and Spanish Springs.”

The tournament win marked Douglas’ third of the year and propelled the Tigers to second in the overall Sierra League standings.

Douglas shot a team score of 374, coming in ahead of Manogue at 389 and Carson at 391.

Galena shot a 413 and Wooster shot a 419.

Douglas sophomore Koko Terada won the individual tournament with a score of 81.

Molly Jordan was fifth at 92, Mari Pimental was ninth at 99, Emily Gosselin shot a 102, Rachel Murphey shot a 103 and Carly Talia came in at 116. All six will represent Douglas at the regional championships.

“Koko and Molly both played well,” Gustafson said. “Koko had a great front nine, but struggled a bit on the back. Molly had a few problem holes, but kept her focus and finished well.

“Mari had her lowest round of the season. She finally broke 100 on the toughest course of the season. That was a great accomplishment.”
