Three simple steps to sharing your faith
July 5, 2013
Do you have faith in God? Do you share that faith with others? There are all kinds of courses on evangelism, all kinds of systems to share your faith. So just how are Christians to share their faith? What is the best method? The Bible gives us the answer to those questions.
1 Peter 3:15, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
Three simple steps in sharing your faith and why you should share our faith.
1. Set apart Christ as your Lord.
Simply put, make sure you're living in ways pleasing to the Lord. If Christ is your Lord your behavior should reflect godly qualities. If Christ is your Lord, you will be guided by the Holy Spirit and folks will see a lifestyle that is reflective of your faith in Christ. It all starts with your relationship with God. Is Christ really your Lord? Or are you just religious by tradition?
2. Give the reason you have hope.
Peter says "always be prepared to give an answer." Some people think that means you need to argue every little point of the Bible, but I've yet to meet anyone who has been argued into the kingdom of God. Rather then arguing about your faith, be prepared to speak about the hope that your faith brings. Hope is; "the expectation of coming good." There is coming an incredible good for those whose hope is in Christ. The promise of the resurrection is "an eternal hope" and the return of Christ is "the blessed hope." If you have faith – share the hope you have. That hope is eternity with God.
1 Corinthians 15:19 states, "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men."
3. Share with gentleness and respect.
Finally, Peter gives us the best way to evangelize. Speak with gentleness, like Jesus, who was not only approachable by everyone but he often approached those whom that society had written off. So our text says "speak gently." The Bible says "a gentle answer turns away anger" and "gentleness is from the Holy Spirit." When you share your faith, ask the Spirit to help you be gentle.
We end with showing respect for whom you're speaking. When some see themselves above others – followers of Christ remember salvation is by grace and from God. To look down on others is far from a Christ-like attitude, but when you show respect for people and your words are backed up by your actions.
Jesus said; "Go into all the world and share the Gospel, teaching people to obey everything I have said." The best method to do that comes from the Apostle Peter when he tells us to be ready to speak about hope and speak with gentleness and respect.
