Tahoe burns send smoke over mountains
October 30, 2013
Smoke was visible above the Carson Range on Wednesday as firefighters took advantage of recent snowfall to conduct controlled burns.
Forest service fuels management crews are burning 30 acres in Slaughterhouse Canyon, north of Spooner Summit this week.
Burning is also being conducted at Skyland. Three inches of snow was recorded at Daggett Summit at the top of Kingsbury Grade on Monday.
“Because of the recent snowfall, conditions allow our crews to carry out operations on larger units,” said Kit Bailey, fire management officer with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Operations are likely to continue through the weekend.
Because of the project size, a significant amount of smoke may be seen rising from the project area.
