Storke fundraiser taking off
February 4, 2014
Sponsorships are taking off for a "friendly" dodgeball tournament Feb. 21 between firefighters and deputies to benefit the family of a Douglas County sheriff's investigator.
Sgt. Bernadette Smith, who is helping coordinate the event with Brian Trute of East Fork Fire District, said several businesses and organizations in the community have stepped up.
The tournament is 6-8:30 p.m. at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School and will feature teams of deputies, firefighters and dispatchers.
Hamdog's restaurant is donating hamburgers and hot dogs; and Carson Valley Little League is donating beverages, napkins and chips, and running the food concession during the event.
The St. Gall Women's Society is providing baked goods.
Sean Gillespie of Wheeler Screen printing is creating the team T-shirts.
Christine Mills of the Alpine County Sheriff's Office is baking cakes for a raffle.
In addition to the dodgeball games, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Explorers will perform a flag ceremony, followed by the National Anthem.
A dance troupe will perform between matches.
Smith said volunteers from the sheriff's office and fire district were providing support for the event from rounding up raffle prizes to sponsoring T-shirts.
Smith invited businesses and individuals to donate items for a raffle by Feb. 19.
She may be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org, or items may be dropped off at the sheriff's office Minden station, 1038 Buckeye Road, Minden.
Proceeds from the tournament are going to Elisa Storke who is undergoing treatment for stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Her husband, Jon, is a sheriff's investigator and Carson Valley native.
Tickets for the tournament are $20 per family, and $10 individual.
They are available at the sheriff's office; East Fork Fire and Paramedics District Office, 1694 County Road, Minden; and at The Record-Courier, 1503 Highway 395, Suite G, Gardnerville.
