Sparks resident David Abrams killed in Feb. 14 accident

Staff Reports

Investigators and firefighters at the scene of Friday's fatal accident on Interstate 80.

A Sparks man was identified on Monday as the victim in a Feb. 14 fatal traffic accident on Interstate 80 near Mustang. According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, David S. Abrams, 50, was eastbound on the freeway in a blue Chevrolet pickup at about 7:44 a.m. when a truck driver pulled over into his lane.

The right side of the truck struck the left rear of Abram's pickup, sending the truck into a guard rail before it careened across both eastbound lanes, up the median embankment and then rolled over into the westbound lanes. Two vehicles traveling west sustained minor damage from debris. Abrams was pronounced dead at the scene, according to NHP spokesman Trooper Chuck Allen.

The driver of the 2010 Freightliner, Shawn Huff, 39, of Tremonton, Utah, told highway patrol major accident investigators that he didn't see the pickup. The accident scene caused one eastbound travel lane and both westbound lanes to be closed for more than an hour while responders staged emergency equipment and completed their on-scene portion of the investigation.

Trooper Doug Hildebrand of the Nevada Highway Patrol's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the accident.

Witnesses can contact him at (775) 689-4623 or regarding case number NHP-140201192.

Once the crash investigation is completed, any applicable charges will be recommended to the Washoe County District Attorney's Office for review, according to Allen.
