July 18, 2013
A 20-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center after colliding with a skateboarder who was crossing Highway 50 in a crosswalk on Wednesday evening.
The accident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 50 and Heavenly Village Way, according to South Lake Tahoe Police.
Steven Magelssen, 20, was riding his bicycle south on Highway 50 in the center left turn lane approaching a red light at Heavenly Village. The skateboarder, Pablo Bobadilla, 23, was riding in the crosswalk along with other pedestrians with the light. Magelssen failed to stop his bicycle at the light and tried to turn left against the arrow when he hit Bobadilla in the crosswalk.
Bobadilla was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital for treatment of cuts and abrasions.
Magelssen was not wearing a helmet, and was injured more severely. He was unconscious, and bleeding from the head, when police and medics arrived.
He regained and lost consciousness several times at the scene prior to being transported away.
After being transported by ambulance to Barton Memorial Hospital, Magelssen was airlifted to the Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Magelssen has been found at fault in this collision for running the red light and violating the right of way of a pedestrian in marked crosswalk.
