Perennial Independent American candidate and South County activist Sam H. Dupuis was killed Monday afternoon after his pickup was struck broadside by a livestock truck.
Dupuis, 87, pulled out from Kyle Drive onto Highway 208 in the path of a blue 2013 Peterbilt tractor pulling a livestock semi-trailer transporting 10 black bulls, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred at about 12:50 p.m. four miles east of Holbrook Junction.
Dupuis' 1992 Mitsubishi pickup was crushed in the accident and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Also killed in the accident was his dog, who was riding in the cab, according to Trooper Chuck Allen.
Big rig driver William C. Whiteaker, 51, of Newman, Calif., was not injured in the accident.
The highway was closed for several hours while troopers conducted the onscene investigation. Traffic was diverted onto the shoulder across Kyle by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Dupuis was a long time resident of Douglas County, who last ran for public administrator in 2010.
When told that Public Administrator Lynn EnEarl resigned and he might have a chance of winning the race, he expressed consternation, saying he was running to talk to voters about the American Independent Party. After some reflection, he said he would try to win the seat. EnEarl, who was on the ballot, won the race, and then resigned a second time.
Dupuis served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and worked for Boeing Co. for 20 years, and worked on the space shuttle and the B-1 before retiring.
He was a licensed pilot, who in 1977 purchased his Topaz Ranch Estates property in part because it had an auxiliary landing strip.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Kay, who died April 21, 2005. The couple had been married 28 years.
