Sheriff’s office prepares for Safety Street

Close to 1,500 trick-or-treaters are expected to ravage the CVIC Hall this Halloween in pursuit of candy.
The 20th annual Trick-or-Treat Safety Street is 3-8 p.m. Oct. 31.
“People can come and get to know their local nonprofits and businesses,” said Deputy Teresa Duffy of Douglas County Sheriff’s Youth Services. “They’re here to help kids have a safe and enjoyable Halloween without going house-to-house.”
More than 100 volunteers make the event possible, which includes 25 candy-bearing booths, raffles and prizes.
“It takes over 100 volunteers because it’s the single largest event in Douglas County on actual Halloween,” Duffy said. “We try to make it conducive for all children to attend in a safe and fun environment.”
With the $3 admission fee, children receive a raffle ticket that could win them prizes such as bicycles, scooters, skateboards and books.
Deputies will also be on the lookout for the best adult, child and family costumes.
“We’re looking for originality and creativeness,” Duffy said.
Former Record-Courier Publisher Tim Huether founded Trick or Treat Safety Street in 1993 as an alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Today, The R-C still sponsors the event with the sheriff’s office and corporate sponsors.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Youth Services Division and its Explorers, GREAT, DARE and Fighting Chance programs.
Jamba Juice is selling hot chocolate, tea and coffee outside the CVIC Hall, and the sheriff’s GREAT car and Hummer will be on display. The sheriff’s K-9 team will also be doing demonstrations.
