Saturday update: Rim fire smoke growing denser in Carson Valley
August 27, 2013
While the 125,620-acre Rim fire only grew another 31 square miles on Friday, the smoke pouring into Carson Valley seemed thicker.
“The fire continues to increase in size and actively through the day and night,” fire officials said this morning. “It continues to exhibit very large fire growth due to extremely dry fuels and inaccessible terrain.”
The fire continues to burn east into the northwestern edge of Yosemite National Park having reached the shores of Lake Eleanor and Cherry Lake, and burning to within a mile of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.
The northern edge of the fire is 75 miles due south of Gardnerville prompting a dense smoke advisory from the National Weather Service.
Visibility is down to less than a half a mile in places. Forecasters say the smoke will continue through at least this evening, and urged residents of Douglas, Lyon and Alpine counties to stay indoors.
