Road trip kicks off pageant week
June 28, 2012
Miss Douglas County and recent Douglas High School graduate Jessika Wass is kicking off the run-up to the Miss Nevada Pageant with a time-honored tradition.
A road trip.
Wass was traveling in a Suburban on Thursday morning picking up the three directors and other four contestants for the drive down to Mesquite for the pageant.
“We’ve got a lot of stops to make,” she said in a telephone interview from the road.
Wass prepared for the journey by bringing her iPod, some interview questions to review and her iPhone with a CNN app, so she can keep up with current events.
Thursday’s journey across the desert will be the contestant’s last opportunity to reflect before entering the fray.
The pageant is on Monday and Tuesday. They’ll be spending the intervening time rehearsing, meeting the other contestants, and the people of Mesquite.
“On Saturday and Sunday we’ll have closed rehearsals,” she said. “When we’re not practicing, we’ll be out meeting people and signing autograph cards. I’ve never been to Mesquite before. It will be a really great experience. I’m so excited to represent Douglas County, with all the other girls.”
Wass’ mother, Jodi, said she’ll be joining her daughter in Mesquite on Saturday.
Miss Outstanding Douglas County Teen Mackenzie St. Cyr, who lives in Reno, said she was excited and nervous at the same time.
“There’s a lot going on during the week with appearances and rehearsals,” she said.
St. Cyr said she was a former Douglas County resident and that she is part Washoe.
“I have a lot of family there,” she said.
In addition to Wass and St. Cyr, Miss Carson City Vannesa Macias, Miss Carson City Outstanding Teen Paris Regan and Miss Eagle Valley Outstanding Teen Brooklyn Maw are participating in the pageant at the CasaBlanca Hotel and Casino.
