Residents reminded to lock vehicles

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to “hide, lock and take” to prevent vehicle burglaries, especially during the holidays.
“Residents of and visitors to Douglas County continue to fall prey to criminal opportunists who look for vehicles that are left unlocked to steal valuable contents and often times the vehicles as well,” said Sgt. Pat Brooks.
He said the sheriff’s office is implementing a new educational program – “Hide, Lock and Take” – to remind members people to hide valuables, lock their vehicles, and take their keys with them.
“Most vehicle burglaries occur when people leave their vehicles unsecured and expensive items are left in plain sight,” Brooks said. “During the holiday season it is especially important to secure gifts out of sight.”
He emphasized that it is never good to leave firearms in a vehicle.
Businesses interested in participating in the program can contact Brooks for “Hide, Lock, Take” posters and cards to remind customers to secure their vehicles and valuables.
“Whether you’re shopping, enjoying a night out, or parking your car at your home, don’t be a victim, and don’t make it easy for criminals,” Brooks said. “Hide, lock, take.”
