Pau-Wa-Lu students complete GREAT program
June 19, 2012
Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini officiated Friday at a graduation ceremony for 21 middle school students who completed the Gang Resistance Education and Training program.
The week-long program was taught by Douglas County Sheriff’s youth service officers Chris Griffith and Teresa Duffy at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.
“GREAT is a cooperative effort between law enforcement, schools, parents and the community – all working together to help children make good life choices,” Pierini said.
“The goal of the program is to prevent youth crime, violence, and gang involvement, while developing a positive relationship among our young people to create a safer community,” he said.
Lessons focus on team building, decision making, goal setting and community service.
Pierini said the GREAT program is a vital tool in DCSO efforts to combat gang activity.
Twenty Carson Valley Middle School students graduated from the GREAT program the previous week.
