Minden pledges $5,000 to annual concert series; addresses RV parking

The Minden Town Board pledged $5,000 for the summer concert in the park series, and took steps to address the parking around Minden Park during the popular events.
On Wednesday, the board agreed to waive park rental fees, provide staff to monitor the park, assist with cleanup and provide free trash dumpsters.
The series, sponsored by Douglas County Parks and Recreation, opens May 31 with Nathan Owens and the Sound of Motion.
The free concerts attract thousands of patrons to Minden Park, some of whom reserve their spots hours before the 6:30 p.m. events begin.
“We have a great lineup,” said Brian Fitzgerald, recreation manager.
He said the town’s commitment helped make the series financially solvent.
GE Energy is the series’ main sponsor with $10,000 annually.
Fitzgerald said the two donations pay for the talent and the sound.
“It was a losing venture before your commitment came,” Fitzgerald said.
“It’s one of my favorite events,” said board member Matt Bernard. “It’s some of the best money we spend. I am happy Minden steps up, and I hope to keep it in Minden.”
Chairman Charlie Condron said the series is “the town’s signature event. It needs our support.”
The board voted unanimously to waive the fees and donate $5,000 for a total contribution of $7,835. It’s the second year the town has made the donation.
The board also agreed to close Fifth Street between Mono and Esmeralda from 9 a.m-9 p.m. the days of the concerts.
“Hopefully, we can address some concerns of your residents who live around the park,” Fitzgerald said. “Sometimes the night before or early in the day, you see RVs parked around the park. If you close Fifth Street, we can accommodate RV parking in a pinpointed location and not upset the view of the people who live around the park.”
Town Manager Jenifer Davidson said a town employee would be posted at the park to direct RVs to a suggested parking area on Fifth Street.
“We want to accommodate the RV parking and meet the needs of the residents who live in the vicinity of the park, and want to enjoy the concerts from their front porches,” she said.
Fitzgerald said the designated space would make it possible for additional food venues offered by service clubs.
“That benefits the community as well as those in attendance with more food selections,” he said.
