Local television stations simultaneously broadcast drug documentary Wednesday evening

On Jan. 9, 2007, the community of Northern Nevada fought back against methamphetamine in a 30-minute documentary titled “Crystal Darkness.”

Due to its success, organizers have teamed up again to produce “The Fifth Anniversary of Crystal Darkness” airing simultaneously 7:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday on ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, My 21 and the CW.

“It was such a major event and people wanted to know what happened to these people, and where we are at today in the fight on meth,” said Sherrille Galli of Global Studio. “It’s a really exciting follow up, and a good overview of the meth situation now and where we’re at in our community.”

The film discusses the methamphetamine crisis, people who are currently struggling with the drug and follow-up on the original individuals featured five years ago, including Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong and his daughter, Kendra.

Although she hasn’t seen the entire documentary Galli did watch the clip of Sheriff Furlong and Kendra.

“It made me cry,” she said. “It was very emotional. It was a very powerful clip.”

KOH Radio 780 is hosting a live call-in show 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and KNPB is airing a one-hour program from 8 to 9 p.m. The KNPB program will re-air the documentary after which a panel of experts will discuss it.

The Crystal Darkness Campaign was a collaboration between local media, schools, law enforcement, recovery specialists, faith organizations and the business community. It was spearheaded by Secret Witness and created and managed by Global Studio, a multimedia production and promotion firm.
