Lei-making party celebrates graduation
April 29, 2014
On May 29 at 6 p.m., Rick and Davelyn Miyashiro open their home to the community for a lei-making party. Leis are made for graduating seniors to commemorate this special event. The Miyashiros welcome participants from all schools to this annual party, and anyone who knows a graduating senior is invited to attend.
Family and friends may wear the Hawaiian Plumeria wreaths during the graduation ceremony and present the lei to the graduate following commencement.
“A lei represents a mother embracing her child and the child’s arms around her neck,” Davelyn said.
This event has become a tradition each May as graduation nears. There is no cost to participate; the Miyashiros supply all flowers and materials as their gift and congratulations to all graduating seniors and their families. They ask that you RSVP as soon as possible, and no later than May 15, so that they’ll have enough time to order the Plumeria blossoms.
For more information, call (775) 450-3873 and leave a message with your name and phone number. Davelyn will return your call and provide directions and other details regarding the floral festivities.
■ Nevada’s Big Give
Today marks Nevada’s Big Give, an annual opportunity to support causes and nonprofit organizations throughout our home state. The event is sponsored by NevadaGIVES (also a nonprofit), whose mission is “to raise awareness of and increase charitable giving in Nevada.”
This 24-hour event encourages Nevadans to “Give where you live.” Starting at midnight and going until 11:59 p.m. today, online users can log on to http://www.nvbiggive.org and peruse charitable causes to support. Users can explore nonprofit organizations and their missions by category or by reading through the complete list of all the causes on the site.
The minimum donation is $10 and all donations are tax-deductible. Nonprofits with the most “unique donors” and the most amount collected will win additional financial prizes. All donations are made to the Razoo Foundation, “a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization which permits donors to advise a regranting of their donations to qualified charitable donations.”
Nevada’s Big Give is a wonderful opportunity to support a favorite charity or perhaps learn about a new cause that could use your financial help. It’s a great day to make a difference.
