Kingsbury Grade night work begins

A readerboard in Genoa announces the May 1 closure of Kingsbury Grade at the summit.

The summit of Kingsbury Grade reopened 5 a.m. Friday after being closed for construction since May 1.

Night work is scheduled to start at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The department reported excavating 5,000 cubic yards and installing 2,600 tons of asphalt and installing 1,800 feet of curb and gutter.

Work is expected to be done in 12-18 months. Until Labor Day, construction will take place at night with one lane closed at a time and delays. The road will be open with one lane in each direction during the day, weekends and all holidays with no restrictions.

The grade is expected to be closed again on the Tuesday after Labor Day and then until it gets too cold to pave, with a break on Candy Dance weekend.

The final two months of work will take place May and June 2015, with the summit closed during the first month in order to meet the construction deadline of July 4, 2015.

The state approved a $14.9 million contract to entirely strip the roadway from Highway 50 to the summit.

According to Project Manager Pedro Rodriquez, the work includes taking the pavement down 13 inches to the ground, making water quality improvements, mitigating natural springs, safety improvements at the intersection with Tramway and lights along the highway.
