Information sought in 30-year-old Jacks Valley homicide investigation
March 8, 2011
It has been 30 years since the body of 24-year-old Cora R. Carillo was found below Jacks Valley Road near Alpine View.
Carillo was a former Carson City cocktail waitress who was last seen the evening of Feb. 28, 1981.
Her body was discovered March 1 at about 10:20 a.m. by a motorist who stopped to take a picture of the scenery.
The body was found on an embankment next to a stream about a half mile from the Alpine View Estates subdivision, The Record-Courier reported on March 5.
She was identified from pictures shown to employees at the Carson City hotel-casino where she worked until she was laid off several weeks before.
Investigators told reporters she was strangled someplace else and the body was dragged down to where it was found.
Carillo was wearing a brown sweater, blue jeans, cowboy boots and a gold chain when the body was found.
A piece of clothing had been wrapped tightly around her neck to strangle her, but there was no sign of other injury. She had been dead less than a day when her body was found, the newspaper reported.
Carillo’s is one of several cold cases occurring between 1972 and 2000 involving unsolved rural female homicides and selected missing person cases being collected by the Nevada Threat Analysis Center’s Terrorism Liaison Officer Program.
Investigators are requesting the public’s assistance in developing potential leads.
