A 52-year-old Clovis, Calif., man was helicoptered for treatment after he fell ill while hiking the John Muir Trail on Saturday evening.
According to the Mono County Sheriff's Office, the man and his 22-year-old son were hiking from Lake Edison to Tuolumne Meadows when the father became ill and activated his emergency notification device.
Mono County Sheriff's Search & Rescue members hiked eight miles through the night to where the SPOT satellite device was activated.
A helicopter from Yosemite National Park flew in early Sunday morning and was able to land near the ill backpacker, who was flown to Crane Flat in the Park.
His son was able to walk out to Tuolumne Meadows. Volunteers with the Search & Rescue Team spent 71 hours on the mission, Mono County Sheriff's spokeswoman Jennifer Hansen said.
