Highway 395 southbound lanes reopen: Northbound may open by 7:30 p.m.

The southbound lanes of Highway 395 through the Pine Nut Mountains reopened at 6:50 p.m.

While the Nevada Department of Transportation is advising northbound traffic to seek another route, it’s estimated those lanes will be open by 7:30 p.m. The highway was closed for more than four hours on Friday after heavy rains washed rocks and locks onto the highway.

Nevada Department of Transportation crews are working to clear the highway that was blocked by debris from a heavy rainstorm that dropped an estimated inch an hour in the mountains above Pine View Estates.

Traffic is reported backed up to the top of Jake’s Hill to the south, with no sign of movement.

Floodwater also crossed roads leading to the subdivision and to China Springs.

The first report of trees, boulders and rocks a foot across came in at 2:45 p..m. today.

First-responders on scene reported deep flooding from strong rainfall and trees and boulders in the roadway, prompting closure of both lanes.

A dense thundercell is still moving over the area. Hillsides burned in the Ray May Fire of 2011 are especially prone to erosion.

A National Weather Service small stream flood advisory expired at 6:30 p.m. During the height of the storm Doppler radar indicated heavy rain between Carson and Tioga passes. About an inch of rainfall has fallen in the past 1-2 hours.
