Genoa cookbook on sale during Candy Dance

Staff Reports

Billie J. Rightmire's Genoa cookbook will be on sale during Candy Dance this weekend.

The Genoa cookbook, "Cooking With Genoa Pioneers," will be on sale during the Candy Dance Arts and Craft Faire on Saturday and Sunday.

Published in 2010, the book was written and compiled by Billie J. Rightmire, a fourth generation Genoa resident.

Rightmire donated all rights to the book to the town. This year marks the third printing of the publication.

The cookbook contains recipes from the late 1870s including wild game, smoking meats, canning vegetables and fruits and other items.

Also included are Jane Raycraft Campbell's candy recipes used when the Genoa Candy Dance first began in 1919. Campbell and her niece, Lillian Virgin, came up with the idea to serve trays of candy prepared in Lillian Virgin's kitchen (now the Pink House.) Candy was served to those attending the dance. Candy was not sold until several years later.

The book includes biographies of early Genoa residents.
