Gardnerville man going to GOP convention
August 27, 2012
Gardnerville resident Jim DeGraffenreid will be attending the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., next week.
DeGraffenreid, who is state Republican Party secretary and a presidential elector, will be attending the convention as an aide to the 125-member delegation.
“This will be my first national convention I’ve been to,” he said. “It’ll be pretty interesting.”
The 11-year resident said because he was a state party office and involved in apportioning delegates, he felt it would be a conflict of interest to be one himself.
As an aide he will be helping the delegation and working with the credentials committee.
“There’s quite a bit of work that’s gone into it,” he said.
Also going to Tampa from Douglas County is Lake Tahoe resident Wes Rice, who also serves as the rural caucus chairman for the state party, and is an old hand at the convention game.
Tampa has been preparing for the convention since the beginning of the year.
Delegates are on their own when it comes to getting to the convention
“Every delegate does their own travel plans,” he said. “We’re staying in the hotel with the Pennsylvania delegation.”
Making reservations was made easier by knowing how many people the hotel had to accommodate.
“We didn’t know who was coming, but we knew how many people were coming from Nevada,” he said.
DeGraffenreid said he is looking forward to the convention.
“I’m looking forward to a good week down there next week,” he said. “We’ll come out of the convention with the party unified and ready to turn Nevada red.”
DeGraffenreid works as an agent at Farmers Insurance in Minden.
